Local Spotlight on Yemi Jars

the Whole Orrdeal exists to encourage health, creativity, and community through artisan soap and body products. Welcome to my first in a series of interviews with local artisans who share some of the same desires.

LOCAL SPOTLIGHT ON

I recently had the privilege to do a Facebook live interview with Liya Brown of Yemi Jars and Doitonpurpose.org.  Liya is a wife and a mother who struggled with weight gain and depression, and finally discovered what worked for her. She discovered how to eat, move, live, and do everything with a purpose. Her goal is to help people realize that they are equipped and here for a special purpose that only they can accomplish, and to provide guidance and encouragement as they realize that purpose.

What inspired you to start Yemi Jars and Do It On Purpose?

I would say my first inspiration is my mother. I grew up watching her use food as medicine and making delicious, healthy meals. I think that was my first inspiration to enter the health and fitness field. As a dance fitness instructor, over the years, I noticed that people’s main struggle was not exercise and fitness, but actually nutrition. I decided that healthy food doesn’t have to be bland. It doesn’t have to be boring. You don’t have to eat the same things over and over. I came up with some options where you can have healthy, colorful, and delicious food. I actually named Yemi jars after my mother, because her full name is Yemisrach. Yemi means happiness. It’s kind of a play on words, “happiness in a jar”.

The other special, unique thing about my business is that everything is in a jar. Doitonpurpose.org has pictures of my Salad In A Jar creations, as well as the Indulgence In A Jar line that we are featuring today.

How are you encouraging the local community to be healthy?

Honestly, I had to start by working on myself, sharing my journey, and being transparent about my struggles. We all, pretty much, have the same struggles. I don’t enjoy cooking. I enjoy good food, but I don’t enjoy the time that I spend in the kitchen. I really don’t like bland foods either, so that’s where I started.  How can I work on myself and encourage other people in the process?

I love creating and we’re artists, so how is your creativity reflected in Yemi Jars?

They say we eat with our eyes first, right? When I’m looking to create a jar, I look at it as a painting. I look at the color combinations. I look at the composition of the jar. I break it up to where I may put reds, yellows, greens in there and make it inviting to eat. It makes it simple. You don’t have to count calories, you just eat as many colorful things as you can.

How do you want Yemi Jars to contribute to our local community?

I love being accessible. I try to use as many organic and local produce and products as I can. I want to be an asset to our community, so that you don’t have to necessarily order from across the country. I’m right here. Its just a nice touch to have that local person, and we all bring our different talents and skills together for our own community.

Those of you who know me, know that I love bringing the local community together. I love networking, because I get to know people on a more intimate level where I can say, “You know what? I recommend you to so and so because I know who they are. I know that they’re going to stand behind their product. I know that they are going to stand behind the name that they’ve put out there for you.” That’s very important to me. I can recommend  Liya Brown of Yemi Jars.

A Facebook live viewer asked, “Where can we place orders for Yemi Jars and the Whole Orrdeal soaps?”

Yemi Jars: I currently take weekly orders on my Yemi Jars Facebook page. I’m trying to get to the point where it’s just one click of a button to order.

the Whole Orrdeal: The soaps can be ordered at theWholeOrrdeal.com and you can see all the products that I have currently available. I am in the process of getting my shopping cart going, so that it’s just a click of the button but, for now, you list the items you want and I’ll contact you for payment.

Both of us also do local shows. If you are a part of any local show and you’re interested in having us there, let us know

I want to be able to support other local artisans and, in return, to be inspired by them. I don’t specialize in cupcake soaps, but I was inspired by these whiskey cakes. The first thing that brought me to Yemi Jars, was the fact that they taste delicious. They really do. You get these wonderful breakups of color. You have the whiskey cake at the bottom, and then the whipped topping which has whiskey in it as well, and then this awesome ganache on top. That was actually something that, when I did the cupcake soaps, I wanted to recreate, the layers and texture.  I was trying to get the smell down too because it’s just very yummy, so I used a vanilla bourbon fragrance oil and cocoa pull it together.

We have talked about the fun things, and the things that are inspiring, but at the end of the day sometimes it just is not fun. There are days that we are trudging through life and we need a pick me up. What are a few things that keep you going when it gets tough?

I would say, first and foremost, God. He placed this purpose on my heart and I’m determined to not die without fulfilling that. Second, I would say my husband. He truly supports and sacrifices so much to make sure that I can follow my dreams. I love that. My kids, they make sacrifices too, when I’m cooking, doing things, and having to go to events and shows, just being understanding and supportive. And finally, my friends ,my community, which you are one of those people. Guys, she is so supportive. She pushes me. And all the people who order from me, come back, give me such encouraging advice, and tell me how good it is. That just makes me want to do more and serve my community more.

Those of you who haven’t had the jars, and you’re going to have them for the first time, cause you know you want them, give her some feedback. Encourage her. Help her to become even better, and in return you may just find out that you’re going to have this awesome friend who will encourage you as well. That’s something that I hope we gain out of this, that sense of community, that sense of wanting to encourage each other. There’s too much negativity in the world already . We don’t need any more of that.
